17 year old violinist William Yao is a resident of Barrington, Rhode Island, USA. He began studying violin at the age of six with Mr. David Rubinstein at the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School. Since 2011, he has been a pupil of Dr. Ann Setzer and Mr. Khullip Jeung at the Juilliard Precollege. William is a two time finalist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Concerto Competition (2012, 2013) and a three time winner of the Rhode Island Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Competition (2010, 2011, 2012). In 2014, he was awarded the bronze prize at the International Virtuoso Competition. As a chamber musician, he has performed in masterclasses for Yo Yo Ma, Robert Chen, Jennifer Ross, Larry Rachleff, Steven Rochen, and Lois Finkel. William has also performed in Symphony Hall, the Tsai Center, and Veterans Memorial Auditorium as a part of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Rhode Island All State Orchestra. From 2010 to 2013, William attended the Meadowmount School of Music during the summers under the tutelage of Dr. Setzer. In 2014, William attended the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg Austria. Last summer, William performed at Carnegie Hall and toured China as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. Besides violin, William enjoys playing jazz trumpet, cross country running, and math.
